Do unto others…

September 21, 2010

This one will be short and bitter.

Of COURSE my number one priority in raising Little D and the one we have so affectionately labeled “numero deux” is to make sure they are good people.

Little D has already been blessed with brains and beauty through genetics, so we may as well nurture the nice, right?

So we want her to share and to care. To empathize and to sympathize. To do unto others…

But.

When a pig-tailed little prepster on the playground tells her she “doesn’t want to be her friend,” and her little face crushes with disappointment, or a neighborhood bully says her drawings “are stupid and don’t look like anything,” or, as in a recent occurrence, when a boy (granted he was a little older, but shouldn’t that make him WISER, too?!?) called her “stupid,” I just can’t find it in me to want her to be nice. To want her to empathize. To want her to do unto others…I want her to tell them to eff off.

Is that bad?

I mean, seriously, Lindsay Lohan was the nice girl in “Mean Girls”…look how that turned out.

I firmly agree especially when it comes to your own children, sometimes “those kids” need a little taste of their own medicine, it may not go down so well, but they may just think twice about doing it again.
